The first snow usually falls by mid-November, and the mountains above Skytop Lake may be covered with a mantle of white until the end of March. The average annual snowfall is around 50 inches. The best time to enjoy winter activities is from mid/late December to the end of February.

Skytop offers a flurry of winter activities from snowboarding, to downhill skiing on Skytop’s slope offering visitors 2 poma lifts and a vertical drop of 275 with 7 trails. Cross-country skiing on two miles of groomed trails, and the remaining network of trails (30+ trails) are for back-country skiing. Avid adventurists can back-country ski all the way up to the Western Trail, which is the top of West Mountain, ski the rim which is a mile or so, and then ski back down the ski slope. Snowshoeing is popular, and for children Skytop offers snowshoes shaped like dinosaur’s feet. There are no designated snowshoe trails or if guests prefer they can snowshoe on the groomed trails. Other activities included: ice-skating on a weather protected rink, sledding and Skytop’s historic toboggan. Skytop’s toboggan run was popular on the day the resort opened in 1928, and today, is one of last remaining toboggan runs in the northeast. To this day it is a popular activity for children of all ages and adults alike.

One of the most talked about events during the winter months at Skytop is the uber cool winter picnic. The winter picnic is a favorite among parents and families who can meet at the bottom of the ski hill and enjoy a hot lunch of chili, homemade soups, salads, hamburgers and hotdogs, hot chocolate and more. The cool part is, the kids don’t have to get dressed and undressed to eat, saving that hassle from the day, and it allows the kids to get right back to the slopes, trails or sleds for a continued day of fun in the winter sun. Winter picnics are a Saturday event and included in the room rate.

Skytop offers great winter packages that include many of the activities above. Visit Skytop’s website and check out their specials and packages page to learn more.
